Who is a Carer?
The word Carer is often used by Health and Social Services to identify a family member or close friend of someone with an illness, disability or who has mental illness.
Often Carers do not see themselves as a carer. Many people fall into the role of carer because they see it as an extension of their responsibilities within the relationship they have with the person that is ill. Often Carers feel isolated and overburdened and may develop stress and anxiety themselves because of the pressure that they face.
As a carer you are not alone
Statistics from the Department of Health show that:
- There are 5.7 million Carers in Great Britain
- 46,000 in the Wigan and Leigh borough area
- Almost 1 in 4 are caring for someone with mental illness or form of dementia
